What does air conditioning mean?
The term air conditioning covers the range of solutions that keep a comfortable temperature at home all year round: cooling rooms in summer and heating them in winter, while controlling humidity and air quality. Today the heart of a good system is the inverter heat pump, a technology that covers both seasons very efficiently with a single appliance. On this page you will find a guide to help you navigate the different types, while the dedicated categories show you the available products straight away.
Cool or heat? The heat pump does both
The most important difference from the past is that you no longer need to separate the air conditioner from the heating system. A heat pump air conditioner cools in summer and, by reversing the cycle, heats in winter, often at a lower cost than gas radiators, especially during the milder seasons. If your goal is heat alone, you can consider dedicated heating solutions, such as condensing boilers and heat pump water heaters for domestic hot water.
Which type of system should you choose?
The choice depends on how many rooms you want to air condition and how your home is laid out. Here are the most common configurations:
- Wall-mounted single split: one indoor unit for a single room, the simplest and most requested solution. You will find them among the single split wall-mounted units.
- Multi split: several indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit, ideal for air conditioning two or more rooms while reducing the footprint. Start from the multi split configurator or the triple split wall-mounted models.
- Cassette or ducted: integrated into the false ceiling for discreet, even air conditioning, like the single split cassette units.
- Portable: with no fixed installation, handy where the outdoor unit cannot be mounted, among the portable air conditioners.
How much power do you really need?
An air conditioner's power is measured in BTU and chosen according to the square metres and insulation of the room. In our catalogue the most common outputs are these:
- 9000 BTU: rooms up to about 25 m², such as bedrooms and studies.
- 12000 BTU: spaces from 25 to 35 m², such as medium-sized living rooms.
- 18000 BTU: rooms from 35 to 50 m² and open-plan spaces.
- 24000 BTU and above: very large rooms, offices and big floor areas.
For larger homes or professional spaces, higher outputs are also available, up to solutions of several tens of thousands of BTU. If you are unsure about sizing, it is best to opt for the higher output when the room is poorly insulated or very exposed to the sun.
Energy efficiency and consumption
A well-chosen system has little impact on your bill. Cooling efficiency is shown by the SEER value, heating efficiency by the SCOP: the higher these indices, the lower the consumption. The A+++ class models are the most efficient, because inverter technology modulates power instead of switching on and off constantly. If you also want the comfort of remote management, look towards the smart air conditioners compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which are controlled from an app and by voice.
The best brands available for immediate dispatch
You will find more than 6,000 products from the sector's leading manufacturers, with official warranty and spare parts available: Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung, Panasonic and Midea. Prices cover every budget, from accessories to the highest-performing solutions for the home and professional spaces. You can compare the full range among the air conditioners and take advantage of the current offers.
Tax incentives and support
Buying and installing a heat pump system may qualify for the tax breaks provided by regulations, such as tax incentives where applicable, such as reduced VAT for renovation work. The conditions depend on the type of work and the documentation, so it is best to check the up-to-date requirements before purchase.
